            Hal Smith Steelhead

Welcome to the Dickson Newsletter. It is my goal to keep it timely and helpful. If you have any questions or comments please email me at DDDicksons@ aol.com

You will have to excuse me from time to time. Work takes me away, but I will always try to get back to you.

Spring:

March finds me fishing the local rivers (The Sky always gets the early fish). That 24 plus pound male steelhead pictured on the front of the web site, was taken on the 13th of Feb. A week later we caught a 20# male a mile down stream. Large male steelhead always enter first to establish the spawning grounds, so fishing early season, is big fish time. A large bright marabou spey I call the "Hal Smith Special" works well. It is a hot orange/yellow pattern. I fish it when there is a lot of glacial silt in the water. April 1, I move over to the Skagit and its primary tributary, the Sauk. My two favorite steelhead rivers I have ever fished are the Sauk in the spring and the Grande Ronde in the fall.

Summer:

I have been offered an opportunity to go back to Cabo San Lucus and run flyfishing trips for Real Danger Sportfishing Travel. I used to do these trips a few years ago. When these guys asked if I would set up a flyfishing program I said "YOU BET!"

We are organizing a trip to go down the last week in May. I can send some info if you would like. We hope to have trips throughout the year but target the winter months.

Mystery Lake is our Canadian lake adventure. These lake run steelhead are the strongest trout I have ever seen. We go up in mid June to catch the damsel fly hatch.

July and August will be spent chasing summer steelhead and Chinook salmon on the North Fork Stilly. Nice steelhead and kings to 30 lbs. are not uncommon.

If you have any questions or need information just send me a note or call (360)435-6499.
