Playa

Sian
Ka'an Bio Reserve
This is the northeastern portion of the Yucatan Peninsula, home
of the Mayan culture.
Your trip will start with your flight to the Cancun airport which
is located about 12 miles from the city. There is a hotel strip
built up all along the way. This is where your first night will
be spent.
From here you will travel south through Playa del Carmen, and continue
on to Tulum at the entrance to the Sian Ka'an Bio preserve There
is nothing but jungle and beach the entire distance, dotted with
small towns, and many tourist attractions in various stages of completion.
It is becoming a worldwide destination, with many European visitors.
The main city of Cancun is old, but interesting. The newer area
extends down towards the airport and offers numerous large and smaller
hotels along the beach and lagoon. Isla Mujeres, or Island of Women,
is a ferry ride away, and full of snorkeling and exploration opportunities.
Puerto Morelos is a town we pass through on the way to Playa del
Carmen, which is a blossoming city with lots of old flavor, mingled
with the modern growth. It was a fishing town at one time, and still
has many boats drawn up on the shores for excursions.
We pass Playacar, Puerto Aventuras and Akumal which have all grown
in recent years to become havens for condos, apartments, and luxury
villas for the wealthy throughout the world. Tulum is the end of
the main road for us, and is a very old, very Mexican town where
the new world is attempting to intrude. It is also the area we choose
to stay, as it is between the fishing grounds and the excursion
areas. The main road continues on to Chetumal, but goes inland from
here.
The road to Boca Paila is a pitted dirt road that is only about
20 miles, but somewhat slow going. Here are the fishing grounds
for those bonefish.
