Why
Boca Pilia? The
pursuit that led us to Boca Pilia (means "River Mouth")
was not as difficult as you might think. Just like most anglers,
Mike and I wanted a destination where we knew even our most novice
anglers were going to catch bonefish. Sure we could have went to
Florida for big bones, but there the guide is throwing 3 pounds
of live shrimp in the water, In hopes a bonefish shows up. You better
be able to really cast. And there isn't a lot of fish.
We
also thought about the Bahamas but the bonefishing is no better,
and cost is prohibiting. We wanted a great shot for a reasonable
dollar.
What
we didn't know was that Boca Pilia flats, south of Cancun, are protected
in the Sian Ka an (Myan for "where the sky is born") Biosphere
Reserve. You won't get blown off. Punta Allen is good, but that
3 hour road travel will bleed your kidneys. In the winter, B.P.
is a better gig.
The
flats are firm. Wading is 80 degree water is the rule. These Caribbean
waters are better than the photos. Weather is stunning. Think Hawaii,
but less rain.
Novice
friendly fish: I am not going to tell you they are duck soup, but
you should see multiple shots every hour, every day.
The
Permit and curious Barracuda are just some of the other fine flyfishing
species.
The
fishing:
We are not going to make you sit in a flats boat, while your buddy
takes your time up front. We have both specifically designed pontoon
rafts for casting, and inflatable kayaks for our fishing. (We fly
them to Mexico). Your time should be fishing, not watching. Mike
and Dennis will be your guides.
We
will have our trick flies, use our specialty lines and rods. Just
come.
So
there you have it. Bonefish friendly waters that even a novice can
catch. A winter wonderland, where you don't even have to think about
the frigid climate of the north.
I guess
your biggest problem will be deciding how to convince yourself you
need to go home.
Large
numbers of Bonefish come in from the ocean during this temperate
time of the year. Think Hawaii. It's like that.
The
gear:
Happy
to send leader and fly selections in Itinerary.
The following is a list of gear that we recommend. It's short cause
